Chip carving is one of the oldest forms of decorative woodcarving. It requires a straight-edged knife but a skew-ground or offset blade knife can also be used. Chip carving involves making small triangular cuts in wood to create patterns. This art form began over 1,000 years ago and evolved simultaneously in many different lands. Because of its widespread popularity, the designs were often so similar across nationalities that it was impossible to discern one from another.

As the practice spread throughout the world, the skills required to carve wood were passed down from generation to generation. Chip carving was a popular way to decorate furniture in Sweden. Eventually, schools were opened to teach the craft. The skills and knowledge of carvers from centuries ago have benefited modern chip carvers. Through the generations, knowledge and experience was passed down from carver to apprentice and student. It is a long-lasting process that continues today.

How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. This chemical reaction causes the wood color to change from white and brownish red. Oak is the most common wood type for staining. However, you can also use other wood types.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. One method involves mixing the stain and a solvent and then spraying it on the wood. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. Light colors such as maple work well with non-penetrating stain.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. You can use a paintbrush to apply stains. This allows you spread the liquid evenly over the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Apply the stain next. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Make sure that the stain does not drip off the edge of the wood. Before moving on to the next steps, allow the stain drying completely.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Three coats are recommended for polyurethane. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
